Further to our advice last week on MUA Protected Industrial action at Patrick Terminals we have been advised of further action.
The action is nationwide. However their Melbourne Terminal operation will be severely impacted with stoppages of 4 hours commencing at 0300 hours and 8 hours commencing at 1100 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday , along with a range of other bans for the month of October. This will greatly impact on all port operations in Melbourne as other terminals will be asked to take some of the vessels normally processed at Patrick. The likely outcome based on previous action in 2020 is
- ongoing port rotation changes where berthing windows cannot be confirmed, port rotation changes are often at very short notice
- port omissions by shipping lines , resulting in backlog of containers at origin ports for destination Melbourne
- long delays to berthing causing congestion and unfortunately that may result in the imposition of Port Congestion surcharges.
Other ports will also see increased port action the updated list of action and Patrick’s statement can be viewed in this release from the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA Release - MUA launches pre-Christmas Industrial Campaign with Nationwide Strikes).
Our teams in Client services Import and Export and our Transport teams will inform as fast as possible to any impact on shipments and we will continue to update through our news alerts.
